Heat Transfer Film Edge Vs Lifted Edge: Inspection Guide

A transferred decoration can end at a visible boundary where the printed or coated layer meets the bare surface. A lifted edge is a loss of contact at that boundary. First confirm the intended construction with the decoration supplier. In some processes the carrier is removed and only the decorative layers remain, so a visible boundary should not be assumed to be a sheet left on the part.

Look for physical separation

Compare against an approved sample and use both diffuse and shallow-angle light. An edge lying flat can remain visible because of a change in color, gloss or thickness. A suspected lift may show a curled lip, a small shadow that changes with lighting, or a gap under magnification. Look around curves, corners and artwork ends, where changes in shape can make inspection harder.

Keep the untouched sample for comparison

Photograph the boundary before rubbing or probing it. If a handling or adhesion check is required, use the method agreed for that decoration on a separate sample. Record the location, whether the edge is raised and when the change first appears. This helps distinguish an acceptable transition from a decoration that is beginning to separate.
