Scuff Marks in Cosmetic Packaging: Trace to Tray or Carton

When a compact comes out of its carton with a scuff, begin by recording where the mark sits while the pack is still in the tray. A shape that matches a tray rib suggests a contact location. It does not tell you when the contact occurred.

Separate packing, transit, and removal

Photograph clean parts before packing. Make a control pack that is packed and opened without the transit sequence. Handle the controls and test packs in the same way, and film removal when an edge might scrape the finish. Map scuffs against tray ribs, carton folds, neighboring items, and any points where the insert can move.

To investigate a suspect surface, change one contact condition in a repeat test while keeping the rest of the pack as close to the original as practical. For instance, compare the same tray seated in cartons with and without an agreed restraint at the suspected location. Removing the tray entirely can change the loads and obscure the comparison. Report which marks occurred during the control unboxing and which appeared only after the transit sequence. Confirm the proposed fix on the complete shipping pack.
